Leica
FS C Forensic Comparison Macroscope
by Scott Doyle
Update -Centerline Issue
I originally reported this week that I had
problems with fuzziness of the centerline of the FS C. Well I'm happy to
report that it was OPERATOR ERROR that caused this problem!
Leica Representative and AFTE Technical
Advisor Wayne Buttermore called me immediately upon hearing that I
had a problem and explained very quickly that I had not correctly focused the
eyepieces.
I had in fact focused one of the eyepieces
but did so as I had always done with my old scopes. This was incorrect.
My old scopes only had one eyepiece that focused and you focused it on the
object not the centerline.
The FS C requires both eyepieces to be
focused individually on the centerline and not the object being
viewed. Once I did this everything looked beautiful! An example can
be seen below!
The images above show the
centerline of the FS C at it's narrowest prior to focusing the eyepieces (a),
the centerline of the FS C focused
(b), and the centerline on my old macroscope (c). Man what a difference!
I now have one awesome comparison macroscope! Hopefully my mistake with
help others like me that don't have the patience to wait for their Leica
representative to explain how things work! I don't know about you but I
just can't leave a new $50,000 dollar "toy" in a cardboard box! Not to
imply the FS C is a toy but for this firearm examiner it was like Christmas came
early!
Thanks Wayne!
