HELP: Virtual Comparison Microscope - Cartridge Case ID

 

1.Scope

This is where the comparisons take place.  The SCOPE consists of two side-by-side viewing areas with the UNKNOWNS visible in the right field of view and the TEST STANDARDS visible in the left field of view. A hairline dividing line separates these two viewing areas.  Use the POSITIONING joysticks to move these images around in their respective viewing areas.

2. Unknowns

Select an UNKNOWN by clicking on one of the eight cartridge case images.  The image will load in the right SCOPE field of view. The selected UNKNOWN shows an empty bullet holder.  UNKNOWNS matched to a STANDARD will display a "check" mark and cannot be re-selected.

 

 

 

3. Test Standards

Select a STANDARD by clicking on one of the eight white boxes.  Clicking a box will load the breech face image in the left SCOPE field of view.  The selected STANDARD is represented by an open box.

 

 

 

 

 

4. Focus

When a known or unknown image is loaded in the SCOPE window it will need to be focused before it can be examined.  Move the FOCUS SLIDER up or down using your mouse to focus the images.  Each side of the scope has a focus slider and both must be used to focus the individual right and left images. Left-click and hold to move the blue slider up and down.

 

 

5. Rotation

The right and left images that load in the SCOPE window at a random degree of rotation.  Use the two ROTATION KNOBS adjust the rotational orientation of each image. Left-click and holding while dragging the mouse to the right and left to rotate the image.

 

 

6. Positioning Joystick

Use the two JOYSTICKS to move the cartridge case breech face images in the left and right SCOPE fields of view.  Left-click and hold while dragging the mouse up/down or right/left to position the images for comparison.

 

 

7. Locked/Unlocked

The LOCKED/UNLOCKED button when engaged allows for the movement of both the UNKNOWN and STANDARD in unison right-left or up-down.

 

8. Magnify

Used to increase the image magnification from 10X, 20X, 30X, and 40X.  Current magnification is displayed in the LED window.

9. It's A Match

When a match is found between the KNOWN and UNKNOWN images click on the "MATCH" key to record your identification.

 

 

10. Recall Stored Matches

Used to record a match between an UNKNOWN and STANDARD.  Recorded "matches" are displayed by a numerical value.  Stored "matches" are indicated by a red LED and can be recalled using the "Recall Match" buttons. 

Stored matches can be cleared individually by clicking on the respective red LED or can be cleared as group by clicking the "Clear All" button.

 

 

11. Clear All Matches

Clicking on the CLA Blackboard button will clear all stored matches and will completely reset the exercise.

 

12. Get Final Results

When all eight UNKNOWNS are matched to KNOWNS a diploma will appear in the lower right corner of the application window.  The "DIPLOMA" button will submit your final answers to check against the current answer group.  Follow the instructions presented after clicking the diploma to receive your score.
